Ice Fishing Fun

The Friday after Christmas we took the kids out ice fishing. A friend of ours has a fish house out on the same lake as the cabin, he allows us to use it if he isn't. I dropped Kevin and the kids off at the fish house to get it set up and so they could catch the start of the evening bite, then I ran to town and got pizza and breadsticks for dinner.

We had a great time fishing as a family. The kids really seemed to enjoy it, especially when the fish were biting. Once Addie caught her first and only fish of the night and she was growing impatient because the fish weren't immediately biting again, she laid down and fell asleep. We brought home some nice sized crappies and enjoyed eating them last week!

Paul seemed to have the best luck with the fishing, he pulled up several nice sized crappies!

Christmas

We had a very relaxing Christmas this year. It's not real often that I can say that, I feel like typically we are running around like crazy and we don't actually get to enjoy the time spent with family. Usually on Christmas Eve, we get together at Kevin and Mary's, then on Christmas Day we are home and Mary and Ron come for the day. This year we got together with Kevin and Mary on the Sunday before Christmas, it was nice to break up the holiday a little bit. We had Christmas with my mom's side at the beginning of December. On Christmas Eve we made homemade pizza for dinner and then went to Mass.. When we got home the kids had discovered that our Elf on the Shelf had left, she usually leaves on Christmas Eve when we go to bed, but she left while we were at Mass. She also left a note and a gift for the whole family. We all got a new pair of pj's, a big box of hot chocolate, 2 bags of marshmallows and the movie Despicable Me 2. The kids quickly changed into their new pj's and we settled in for a movie night. Shortly after I popped popcorn and they had their hot chocolate, they all decided it was time for bed so that Santa could come!

Christmas morning we woke up to very excited kids, or I should say we were woken up by four very excited kids! It was nice to be able to just hang out at home, we let the kids have a pj day all day! They opened their gifts from Santa and the gifts from us.  Mary and Ron came down on Christmas morning for brunch and spent the majority of the day with us. Christmas night we  checked out the Kiwanis Lights display in Mankato. All of the kids loved the light display!

4 of 6 kids having hot chocolate after we checked out all the lights!

Winter time.

We spent Thanksgiving weekend at my Grandparent's house. It was just our family and my Grandparents. It really was a nice weekend just to spend with them. We played games, had a fire in the fire place, had a movie night complete with homemade pizza and popcorn. I truly cherish every moment I get with any of my Grandparents, I think because I know someday I will no longer have them, so I'm soaking in every moment that I can now. This is after our game of Sorry!, in which Paul won, he came in from behind and ended the game in a win. He wasn't so happy in the beginning he was losing, but he sure was happy once he go to the end and had won!

Being crazy cats at Granny and Papa's.

Stella and Addie had a holiday fun night at school for all ECFE and Preschool kids. They enjoyed it, they got to make different crafts and projects, have a snack and they each got a gift to take home, a new book. It was a fun night to spend with them while Kevin spent the night at home with the big kids.

Silly Stella. She loves making tents out of blankets in the living room.

Adeline in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle obsessed. Who would have thought a show from my own childhood would be so popular for my 4 year old tom boy? Rafael is her favorite!

Stella and her best buddy Ryan finally got their chance to go to Disney on Ice for their birthdays, just like their big sisters get to for their birthdays.

We attended our last Vikings game at the Metrodome, and Pauly got to attend his first game ever! My dad took us to the game for our birthdays and ended up with an extra ticket, so he called me on Friday night before Sunday's game and asked if Paul would like to go. We had great seats, we were in row 2 on the 30 yard line on the Vikings side. What a great birthday present and I think we may have made a Vikings fan out of Paul, he sure seemed to enjoy himself, or maybe it was the fact that Papa Matt spoiled him at the game!

See how great our seats were? I didn't use zoom to take these pictures at all!

Likely the closest I'll ever be to Jared Allen.

December was a crazy busy month for us and it appears that January will be equally as busy! Here's to hoping that February will be a little calmer!

Fall catch-up.

Fall was very crazy and very fun! The whole family went to the pumpkin patch for Cub Scouts, the girls thought it was fun to tag along to Paul's event and to be able to pick out their own pumpkins too.

During MEA break, we had a lunch date at Dairy Queen!

We had a Sunday night dinner date with friends, 6 adults, 9 kids, yes, we're slightly out numbered. We strategically placed all the kids at one end of the table so that the adults could all visit and the kids could talk with their friends as well.

Halloween

This was the first year each kid picked their own costume, so that was kind of fun, usually we guided the younger ones or picked the costume for them, they enjoyed getting to pick out their own costumes!

I spend the bulk of my days with these two loves. They forever keep me entertained, even on my most trying days. They love to play dress up.

In mid-October, I took a secretary job at church, it's just one day a week, but it gets me out of the house for a day and the girls get to go to daycare, Addie goes to daycare for the morning and then to preschool in the afternoon. Stella seems to love daycare, this fall was the first time she ever went to daycare. We are very blessed that we were able to have the girls go back to our old daycare, the last time Addie was there, she was 18 months old.

First day of school

I am a little delayed in posting these pictures from the first day of school. Life has been hectic and I don't have as much time to update our blog as I would like to. Amelia started 2nd grade this year, Paul started 1st grade, Adeline is in preschool and Stella is doing ECFE. They all really enjoy school, which is a blessing! I just hope their love for school continues through the years!

We are very blessed that Amelia has a great team at school this year, with moving up a grade, she got a brand new team of educators and they have been a huge asset to our family so far. We really liked her team last year, but this new team is amazing. Her speech pathologist is very knowledgeable and is great at her job. Her special education teacher is one of the kindest ladies I've ever met, she has reassured me more than once that I'm not a terrible parent and that we are doing the best that we can for Amelia. She said not many parents are as involved in their child's education as we are. Her classroom teacher is awesome, sweet and kind, just they type of teacher Amelia needs. I don't have any complaints about how 2nd grade is going for our sweet girl.

Paul loves first grade and the work he brings home shows it. He is excelling, which makes my heart sing with joy. We have conferences next week and I can't wait to hear his teacher's perspective about how things are going. Adeline LOVES preschool. She goes 3 days a week in the afternoons. She's making friends and learning a lot of new things. Addie is excited to share what she learned at school and is trying to teach Stella the things she's learned.

Stella and I go to ECFE (early childhood family education) on Friday mornings, Addie goes to work with Kevin and hangs out at the station while we are at school. Stella loves going to school, there are 8 kids in her class, which is a huge improvement from the 3-5 kids that were in her class last year. We only have a few more classes left in this session, it's nice for her to get out and interact with other kids. She always looks forward to going to school and is constantly asking when she can go to "EFG" again.

Update.

It's been forever since I've posted here. Life got busy and summer got away from me. In my last post I wrote about our doctor referring Amelia to a neurologist. We saw the pediatric neurologist at the beginning of June, at that time it was just a visit in her office, we told her our concerns, she did a few small tests herself and recommended that Amelia have an MRI and EEG. The MRI and EEG were completed at the end of June, Amelia did great with both. The noise of the MRI was tough, it was loud and Amelia had a difficult time with that, but she got through it and they got the images they needed. Then we played the waiting game. We went back to the neurologist at the end of July for the results of the MRI and EEG. The MRI was clear, which was good, but still doesn't give us much information. The EEG didn't show seizure activity, which was also good, this is what she was concerned about. The EEG however showed slower brain activity, which is to be expected in people with learning disabilities. The neurologist sent us back to our family doctor, she had recommended that he do blood work to check her lead levels, hemoglobin and to run some chromosome tests. We saw Dr. Mark on 8/12, he called me last week and her lead levels were normal, her hemoglobin was low, so he recommended that we start an iron supplement. Amelia and Paul were at my mom's last week, so I asked my mom to pick up the supplement and start giving it to her. We're still waiting on the chromosome results. He said they could take a few weeks to get. So that's what's happening with Amelia in a nut shell.

Parenting is hard.

(WARNING...this is LONG!)

No one ever said it would be easy, but no one ever tells you just how difficult it is to be a parent. I guess if we knew ahead of time just how difficult it is, no one would ever have kids. We've had our share of parenting struggles over the last eight years, especially since we have four kids. Our biggest parenting struggles have been with our oldest, Amelia. This is a very difficult thing for me to talk about and therefore not many people know what I'm about to write about. This is probably the deepest blog post I've ever written. After all, our blog is called "Our Tales of Parenthood", so it is a place to share all of our triumphs, joys and even the difficult part about parenting. This is a very private thing for me and I feel like unless you've walked in our shoes, people may not understand what we're going through, so for me, it's easier to keep it to myself. So to my close friends, I apologize in advance for not sharing this with you. It's been a difficult thing for me to swallow, therefore it's been tough for me to talk about it.

I'll start from the beginning. Amelia was late at hitting her milestones, and late is just a relative term. We thought it was all completely normal, since she was our first born, we didn't know what to expect and our doctor never seemed concerned when we mentioned it to him. She didn't start crawling until almost a year, didn't walk until she was 18 months, wasn't really talking a whole lot until she was about 2-1/2 and even at that, unless you were with her all the time, most people didn't understand what she was saying. We did her preschool screening in Montgomery, at that time she was going to preschool at the Catholic school and that's where we had planned to send her to school, so technically we didn't have to do the screening. The screening went terrible. Amelia had high anxiety and difficulties separating between the ages 3-6.

When they do screenings in Montgomery, at least at that time, they had several people doing the screenings all at once, all in the same room and they made parents wait in the hallway while they did the screening. After they complete the screening, they bring the parent in to go over the results. I was shocked by what they told me. Everything that I thought she could do, suddenly she wasn't able to do and they wanted to further evaluate her. I called Kevin as soon as I got in my car, Amelia and I were going to spend the day together and shop since I had taken off work to take her to the screening, I bawled my eyes out telling him what I had just heard. Then I called my mom to fill her in on what I had just been told and cried some more, feeling like a failure as a parent. After I called my mom, I called my mother in law and cried even more. They all of course reassured me that everything was going to be okay. A couple weeks after screening, we had Amelia's preschool conferences, we expressed the school's concern with her screening to Amelia's preschool teacher. Amelia's preschool teacher felt that Amelia was on track like all of the other 4 year olds in the class and didn't have any concerns. She didn't feel the need for us to further evaluate. Later on in that year we had made the decision that we weren't going to send Amelia to the Catholic school, that we were going to open enroll to a different district than the one we're assigned.

Our city is split into two school districts and there is no real rhyme or reason as to how it's split, because it zig-zags through town. That's not really relevant to the story, other than the fact that we decided to do the screening at the new district, to see what they had to say. Their screening is done differently, and by differently I mean the parents are with the child during the screening, you sit back and watch, you're not waiting in a hallway while they put your child through a battery of tests. I'm by no means a helicopter parent, but it's nice to see what's going on.While she struggled a bit with a few things on the screening, they didn't feel like she was in a dire need of extra testing and said that likely she'd need help with her speech when she started kindergarten, which we knew already.

As many of you know, we held Amelia back and she did kindergarten twice. I blogged about it here. A quick recap, Amelia started kindergarten in September 2010. The day after she started kindergarten Stella was born and I had quit my job about 3 weeks before school started. The school year seemed to be off to a good start, best we could tell anyway. About 2 weeks to a month into the school year, we got a letter home from her teacher stating that they recommend that she be placed in Title One for extra help. At first both Kevin and I were very taken back by this, but we decided to go ahead and sign off on it. By November of that year, she was really struggling with things at school, they did some evaluations and recommended that she have an IEP (Individualized Education Program). By December 1st of 2010 Amelia started special education and speech therapy. Boy that was a difficult thing to swallow and I struggled with it so much that I didn't want anyone to know that my child was in special ed. People judge and I didn't want to be judged on my parenting skills or other wise. It was just easier to keep it between Kevin and our parents. Even telling our parents was a difficult thing for me. Mommy guilt kicks in (yes, there is such a thing!) and I started looking back, trying to recall every little detail of my pregnancy, my labor and delivery and every little thing that had happened in Amelia's short life. Trying to figure out what I did wrong, what caused my beautiful daughter to struggle so. Eight years later, I still struggle with this. In February of 2011, Kevin had dropped Amelia off at school one day and was approached by her teacher, her teacher gave Kevin the heads up that she would be recommending that Amelia repeat kindergarten. She didn't want it to come as a shock to us when we went to conferences and she wanted to give us time to think about it prior to conferences so we could make our decision.

I think conferences were in March that year, we talked about our options, the pros and cons of holding Amelia back, we also talked to a good friend of ours who is a kindergarten teacher and she was a great support, providing words of wisdom and helped to assure us that we were making the right decision to have Amelia repeat kindergarten. I'm thankful that she was there to provide her insight at a difficult decision making time. A couple weeks after conferences we had Amelia's IEP meeting to discuss the plan for the remainder of that school year and the following school year, at that time they recommended we try physical therapy at school to help work on her hand eye coordination as well as her core strength and her muscle tone. They also Amelia do some testing with her physical education teacher to determine what her needs would be. Please forgive me, mom brain is in full force these days and I can't remember all of the details as far as timing and what kind of testing it was. The school recommended that we have Amelia do summer school to help keep her from regressing and to help retain the skills she had already learned, we knew immediately that this was an important thing to do.

In the fall of 2011, Amelia started kindergarten for the 2nd time, this time with a different teacher (her teacher the year before retired at the end of the school year), her teacher for 2nd year of kindergarten is absolutely wonderful. She is great with the kids and keeps a well managed classroom. She is Paul's teacher this year and we've been very impressed with her. When we had Amelia's IEP meeting in the fall of 2011 we went over all of the services she'd be receiving that year. We added PT and occupational therapy in addition to the speech therapy and special education services she was already receiving.  I'm so happy we have a school district that is so proactive and supportive. Amelia made great strides during her second year of kindergarten, more so than her first year of kindergarten. Which, by the way, in the beginning of her first year of kindergarten, Kevin and I chalked her struggles up to all the life changes at home (new baby, mom now staying home full-time and starting school.) Can we say denial?!

The school year progressed along nicely and it was early February 2012 that I got a phone call from her special education teacher, she had great concerns with Amelia's ability to focus and stay on track. We also knew she'd be aging out of her developmental delay label when she turned seven. We decided to make an appointment with our doctor for her well-child check and to voice our concerns, as well as the schools concerns. We found out at her appointment that she was having a difficult time seeing, so our doctor recommended that we get her into the eye doctor and he thought that, that would fix a lot of the issues we were having. We filled him in on the concerns the school was having, as well as the fact that we held her back and were having her repeat kindergarten, he referred us to Fraser Center for further testing. We went to the eye doctor about a week after her appointment with Dr. Mark and then she got glasses within a week or so. Turns out Fraser has a long waiting period to get into them. We were able to get an appointment in April, they actually do two appointments, one for the evaluation and one for the follow up where they go over the results and recommendations with the parents. Prior to our visit to Fraser, Amelia had her testing at school to update her IEP and thankfully we were able to take all of that with us to Fraser and help save a little money, as they didn't have to do as much testing, because the school covered the bulk of it. We really didn't learn more than what we already knew. Basically they told us that she was delayed about a year and a half, instead of functioning at the 7 year old level, she was at that of a 5-1/2 year old and that she'd never grow out of it, she'd be delayed for the rest of her life. That? Was very difficult to swallow, especially because they couldn't offer any insight as to why she was delayed. With all of their testing they did determine that she didn't have ADHD, which was one of the initial reasons for the visits because of the concerns from school. So, in my opinion, Fraser was a big fat waste of money. They charged us a little over $1,000 to find out what the school had already determined, which of course our medical insurance didn't pick up any of it because it was a "psychological" examination, nor did it count towards our deductible. The only good thing that came out of Fraser was the fact that the school could back their plan for Amelia's IEP and she'd be able to continue to receive the services she needed, even though she had essentially aged out when she turned seven. She finished out the school year and was going onto first grade. Yippee! She did summer school again last summer, which is VERY, VERY valuable, in my mind anyway.

First grade was off to a good start. Amelia still receives services for PT, OT, speech and special education. She's making great progress with her speech, she's reading this year, along with spelling and working on math. She still isn't quite where she should be, but she's making progress, which is important to us. She may never be a 4.0 student and we're a-okay with that. She tries her hardest and she's the most kind hearted child you will ever meet. A few weeks ago I got a call from Amelia's special education teachers, she keeps us updated on a regular basis with the progress Amelia is making, so it's not unusual for her to call or e-mail me. She expressed greater concern with Amelia having a difficult time focusing, she's becoming more and more distracted as time goes on and her teacher is having a difficult time drawing her back in when she gets off task. She recommended that we revisit the attention deficit issues. I immediately called and got an appointment with our doctor for Amelia's 8 year old well-child check up. We had tried the glasses, we went to Fraser and she  was getting pretty much every service possible at school, but things still aren't progressing to the full extent, so we knew we had to do something more.

Both Kevin and I went to her appointment last Friday, April 26, we had a great conversation with our doctor about our concerns and about the school's concerns. At first he was recommending that we try a medication for a month and see how she did with it and to see if it helped improve her concentration. Then we told him about our concerns with her sleep patterns, she doesn't always seem to get a good nights rest when she goes to bed, some days she wakes up and she is spot on, the other days she walks around like a zombie. Unfortunately it's a lot of the latter. He asked us a few more questions and then checked her reflexes, in both her knees and her arms. She had none. Nothing at all. You could see the concern on his face at this point, he sat back down and suggested we see a pediatric neurologist for further testing to see if we can narrow down what is going on with Amelia. We left the appointment with a prescription for Concerta, which is a common drug for kids with ADD/ADHD. She is now one of "those kids", as some would people say. She is our kid and we love her unconditionally. At this point in the game, we will do anything possible to help our daughter to be as normal as possible and to get to the bottom of whatever it is that is caused/causing her delay.  She hasn't been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, but we're trying the medication for a month to see if it makes a difference. We are also seeing the pediatric neurologist on June 11th. We just hope and pray that we can get some answers. Our medical clinic will be sending all of my pregnancy/labor and delivery records and all of Amelia's records to the neurologist and I hope we're able to finally get the answers we've been looking for.

It is so difficult to watch your kid struggle day in and day out. Thankfully, she doesn't realize that she's not at the skill level of what her peers are at. Occasionally she does get picked on at school and even got called stupid on the school bus. When she does get picked on at school, she is devastated. It breaks my heart to see her hurt. No one likes to get picked on. Kids these days are mean and it starts younger and younger. Thankfully she does have some great friends and classmates at school.

Please pray for us or keep us in your thoughts as we embark on this next step of our journey.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading our story!

Easter

We had a pretty low-key Easter. We went to Mass as a family, Kevin read at Mass. After church we went to Mary and Ron's for dinner. We had a nice relaxing day at their house. The kids were excited about the Easter Bunny coming and bringing them swimsuits and lake toys. Now if only our snow would melt (again), so that they'll get a chance to use their goodies from the Easter Bunny!

Guess who is EIGHT?!

This girl! That's who!!

Amelia turned eight on March 28. We went out to dinner as a family and then we had cake and presents at home. In a couple weeks we're going to the MN Zoo and a hotel to finish celebrating her birthday. She had the choice of what she wanted to do for her birthday party, she said she wanted to take friends to a hotel. Kevin and I said "You can either have a friend birthday party or we can go to a hotel, but we're not taking friends to a hotel".  She chose going to a hotel. We haven't renewed our zoo membership since it expired in July, my Grandparents gave us money for Christmas to buy something for the family, so we're going to use that money to renew our zoo membership. Our kids enjoy going to the zoo and the membership really pays off. There a few things at the zoo since we've been there, so I'm looking forward to taking them again at the end of the month.

Adeline is FOUR!

When did this little lady grow up? My baby is no longer a toddler, she is a preschooler! Wow! She is spunky as ever and we love her to pieces. She keeps us on our toes and wondering what her next move will be. She is an entertainer, always singing, dancing or telling a joke. She loves her baby little sister to pieces, they are best friends and sometimes each others worst enemies and I wouldn't want it any other way. They play so well together and she has taught Stella so much. In the fall she will be going to preschool and I don't know what I'll do without my daily entertainment! I'm sure Stella will do a fine job keeping me on my toes!

Adeline is a girly girl and Tom Boy all rolled into one. She loves dressing up like a princess, wearing dresses right along side playing Ninja Turtles. When Paul is home from school, you can often find the two of them playing turtles together in Paul's room. Paul passed on his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pj's to Addie. She loves the turtles so much, she just had to have a TMNT themed birthday party!

To celebrate, Kevin and I gave her tickets to Disney on Ice for her birthday. We went with two of her bff's and their mom's which happen to be a couple of my bff's also. All three girls have birthdays within 9 days. Addie is the oldest, next is Rylee and then Kaelyn. They are all standing in birth order too! Such fun little girls!! After Disney on Ice we went to TGI Fridays for a late lunch. The girls had a great time celebrating all of their birthdays!

Recently overheard

It's been a while since I did a post about the things overheard at our house, sometimes the only way I remember these is by blogging about them, I have to write them down or I forget!

Out for dinner at a Chinese buffet, Paul loaded his plate with pizza, fried bread dough rolled in sugar, jello, chocolate pudding, cream puffs and a brownie. He looks up from his plate and said "now this is what I call Chinese". As he was eating his cream puff, he said. "This is heavenly"

Watching tv on Friday night, all of the kids were sleeping but Adeline, she is dancing around the living room and stops and says "ahhhh, diet coke, it just hits you". No one was drinking diet coke nor was there any diet coke in sight and she had water to drink. That girl! I don't know where she comes up with this stuff!

Stella is newly potty trained. A couple weeks ago during our first week of potty training, she insisted on going to the bathroom herself, she comes out of the bathroom with no pants and says "I wipe my butt, I flush the potty, I wash my hands" I said to her "did you pull up your underwear?" She looks at me with a puzzled look and says "where my underwear?" And she ran off to the bathroom.

Adeline is very observant and the other day we were getting ready to leave for ECFE and she looked at Gene and said "Papa Ron is losing his hair! I'm going to grow my hair and give some to papa."

One night I was tucking Amelia into bed and she was telling me about a classmate of hers that hugged her when he was passing out the folders at the end of the day. She followed it up by saying he kissed her hand one day at school and then she said "he sure is a funny guy!"

As you can probably imagine with four kids, there is never a dull moment in our house!

Halloween 2012

The kids got to wear their costumes 3 times this year! And for Adeline that meant 3 different costumes. The first time they wore their costumes was for Trunk or Treat at Grandma and Papa's church, we've never went truck or treating before, but it was fun for the kids, there were about 30 cars in the church parking lot handing out candy. Most of the parishioners handing out candy decorated their trunks with lights, as well as dressing up in costumes to hand out candy. The kids made quite the haul there!

Community Halloween party was held in our church's social hall.
Addie wore Amelia's super cute crayon costume that my mom made when Amelia was almost 4!
Playing ring toss
Dart game. Each balloon had a treat inside it.
We carved pumpkins this year for the first time since Amelia and Paul were real little. The last time we carved pumpkins was when we still lived in Montgomery. Paul was about the same age as Stella is now. None of the kids cared for the pumpkin "guts", but I think over all they had fun carving their pumpkins!

Halloween...before heading out trick or treating. This time Adeline was Princess Tiana from the Princess and the Frog.
They had a great time this year on Halloween and all of the extra festivities! We only went to about 6 houses in town and then I took them to McD's for a quick bite to eat as a treat and then we came home and passed out candy. Adeline is already planning what she wants to be next year!
